Part D or drug coverage is where a lot of Medicare beneficiaries either waste money or don't take advantage of the programs out there.

Prescription drug coverage comes with either Medicare Advantage plans or via stand alone drug plans.  Secondary coverage through either the state or the government works with both types of plans.

When choosing a drug plan, go on the Medicare.gov website (see the links section.)  Once on the website, follow these steps:

  1. Hit the green button that says "Find Health & Drug plans"
  2. Enter your zip code on top and hit "Find Plans."
  3. If you're looking for stand alone drug plans, check off "Original Medicare" on the 1st question and "I don't get any Extra Help" on the 2nd question.  Then hit "Continue to Plan Results."
  4. Enter your medications one by one.  As you enter the first 4-6 letters, your medication will come up.  Click on it, and a dosage list comes up.  Find the dosage and hit "Add Drug and Dosage."  When done, hit "Continue to Plan Results."
  5. Sort of important: on the right side you'll see a little rectangle with your drug list ID and password date.  Save those just in case you have to reenter the website.  It'll save you from reentering everything again.
  6. Now you can choose up to 2 retail pharmacies.  When done, hit "Continue to Plan Results."
  7. Check off the little square that says "Prescription Drug Plans and hit "Continue to Plan Results."
  8. A list of plans appears, lowest cost to highest cost based on the medications that you entered.  You can click on the individual plans to see some more detail regarding premiums, copays, deductibles, and what you can expect to pay for your plans on a monthly basis.
  9. To enroll, hit the "Enroll" button located to the right of the plan name.
